By Michael Odiah

The Director General of Delta State Health Contributory Scheme, Dr Ben Nkechika has charged Deltans on the need to discourage engagements with local healers stating that early diagnosis of disease reduces long term cost and care.

Dr Nkechika who was representative of the State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, at the 40th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Orthopedic Association with the theme “Degenerative Disease of the Spine… Financing Orthopedic Practice in Nigeria”, said, financing process is the first step to overcome in health care which encapsulates Human Resources, Health Care Facilities amongst others of which the state is entirely capable of delivering.

He emphasized that Health Insurance which is a major tenet in Delta State embedded in Okowa’s SMART Agenda through the instrumentality of the Delta State Health Contributory Scheme, is mandatory for all Deltans and targeted at improving the quality of health care in the state while relieving Deltans of financial challenges in the course of acquiring quality health care within the state.

Also speaking at the conference, former Minister of Health, Prof. Christian Onyebuchi hinted that the conference is targeted at raising the level of awareness of health care in the state and country at large, as most people know nothing about their ailments, if it can be tackled in the country or if they can afford it, adding that no one can properly afford quality health care because people don’t save for it owing to the believe that they will not fall ill.

Prof Onyebuchi lauded the Delta State Health Scheme saying that the state has started well through the instrumentality of the Governor, Dr Okowa who has from the initials as a serving Senator has had health related issues at heart, adding that health insurance is the way to go taking cognizance of quality facilities embedded with well trained doctors.

He harped that the health care of Deltans is in safe hands having a doctor as governor of the state.
