Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki

By Lucky Isibor

Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki almost lost his cool with Nigerian students over possible re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of 2019 general elections.

He got a rough end of the stick at the Weekend in Benin City for attempting to convince a cross session of students that Nigeria development and unity lie with the President.

The Governor told the youths that “Nigerians were indeed lucky to have President Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s leader in 2015”.

The youths and students were drawn from the University of Benin, Ambrose Alli University, Auchi Polytechnic in Edo state, Institute of Technology and Management, Usen.

They were alleged to have interrupted the governor few minutes after he mounted the podium to address them at Edo State Youth Leadership Summit 2018 in Benin City, Edo state Capital.

The event with the theme: “Switch: A transition in Excellence in Selfless Leadership” was organized by kinsmen of the Minister of state for Petroleum, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu to raise disciples for possible re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the governor: “We are going through a phase in Nigeria, but we are grateful to God that he has given us someone like President Buhari. You will not agree! Wait, wait. listen, listen, let me explain. First and foremost wait”.

Undeterred and seemingly uninterested students interjected in the negative, no!, while others had threatened to walk out of the hall, grumbling that they would  prefer to stay out of 2019 political fray.

But, thier outburst however did not prevent the governor from striking the heart of the issue which he claimed was a matter of principle.

Obaseki continued: “What I am saying and I believe it and I want you to know that is that if we had continue in that trajectory, we will not have a Country today.

“Nigeria would have failed and Nigeria would have broken up.

“If you had voted in and not doing the things you expect and we are not communicating to you so that you can see how you can get out of your current situation to a greater, you know aspiration for yourselves.

“It will be your fault if that does not happen because you have the instrument to change our society. Finally, sadly, you will,  vote them out?, they answered in the affirmative yes!”.

The intervention of the Minister of state for Petroleum, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu and other guests, however saved the situation from drifting further.
