The Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has tasked the Administrative Panel investigating the clash between some youths in Upper Igun Area of Benin City, Edo State and the police, following the alleged murder of Mr David Okoniba, to do all within its power to ensure the speedy dispensation of justice.

Obaseki who commended the Justice J.O. Olubor-led panel for the prompt commencement of work, noted that his administration exists to protect and defend the rights of ordinary Edo people such as the late David Okoniba.

“I am in power to serve the ordinary Edo people. In a situation that requires government to stand up for the weak and defend their interests in the society, responsible leaders must stand up for them. As a government we will follow this matter to its logical conclusion and will ensure that justice will be done promptly,” the governor said.

He also commended the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Mr Johnson Kokumo, for his cooperation and support for the state government in its resolve to unravel the cause of the death of Mr. Okoniba.

The police boss swung into action following report of the clash and arrested the suspected policemen, who are currently under investigation.

Kokumo was reported as saying that members of the team involved in the clash are currently being investigated and if found culpable, will be made to face the full wrath of the law and vowed that the command would not renege on its fight against all forms of human rights abuses.

The Administrative Panel of Inquiry has since commenced work in Benin City and has been receiving memoranda and oral testimonies from members of the public who witnessed or have useful information about the circumstances that led to the clash.
